I LOVE YOU is one of Charbel Baini's books translated from Arabic into English with introduction by Dr. Mostapha Helwe

You colonized Hong Kong

-1-

When we arrived in Hong Kong,

China was preparing to pounce.

The British were packing their bags

To leave after six months.

Then you arrived...

The people felt that a new colonialism

Had befallen their city,

And that China and England

Would raise their hands in surrender to you.

Your presence changed the international equations

And beautified colonialism.

-2-

Your captivating beauty bound them,

Pinning them to the streets like lampposts,

Forcing them to relinquish their eyes,

Which they had given to you.

Nothing remained on their faces but glasses.

-3-

Only Kowloon bothered me.

When we entered its station,

I found that the trains had stopped

To feast their eyes on you!

Hundreds of people crowded into your cabin,

Hoping to touch your pure body.

And I stood helpless, unable to protect you.

-4-

The only thing that made me laugh

Was the police chasing street vendors...

And you chasing a vendor

Who stole your money and ran away.

I was laughing,

And the streets were laughing with me.

When we decided to return,

Hong Kong was sad,

China was happy,

And England boarded our plane

So, as not to leave you alone.
